North Penn Softball wins District One Class AAAA Title

North Penn's Erin Maher (4) is congratulated by teammates after scoring a run as Bishop Shannahan catcher Claudia Boggi (4, right) ooks away during their playoff contest  at Plymouth WhiteMarsh High School on Thursday,  May 31, 2012. Photo by Mark C Psoras.

It took 27 years, but the North Penn softball team is back on top of District One.

Trailing 1-0 after five innings, the Maidens finally got to Bishop Shanahan's Villanova-bound pitcher Kate Poppe in the sixth scoring twice in the top of the frame to win the District One Class AAA final 2-1 Thursday afternoon.

The district title is the first for the team since 1985, with the North Penn squad eventually claiming the Class AAA state title.

Here's two video interviews follwing the Maidens' victory.

First is junior Alexa Gable, whose RBI triple tied the game at one, then scored the go-ahead run on a error on Michelle Holweger's pop up.

The next video features freshman pitcher Jackie Bilotti, who struck out three in earning the complete-game victory for North Penn

Finally, here is Maidens coach Rick Torresani on North Penn's district championship following the game.

VIDEO: Pennridge's Tori Gerlach, Marissa Sheva on PIAA Track and Field

Senior Tori Gerlach defending her Class AAA 3,200 meter title Saturday at the PIAA Championships, completing the eight laps in a time of 10:38.40. Her first-place finished helped the Pennridge girls to the area's best team finish, as the Rams tied Central Dauphin East for second in 3A.

Gerlach earned a second medal in the 1,600 meters, taking sixth in 4:57.33.

Pennridge had another top finish in the 1,600, as freshman Marissa Sheva used a burst of speed on the final lap to take second place in a time of 4:51.29.

Wissahickon's Max Hairston, CB West's Lizanne Furst on PIAA Track and Field

Wissahickon senior Max Hairston took second place in the Class AAA 110 hurdles Saturday at the PIAA Track and Field Championships, finishing in 14.15. He was also on the Trojans' 4x400 relay to claimed eighth place in 3:22.54.

Junior Lizanne Furst was a member of the Central Bucks West 4x400 relay that also included Courtney Taylor, Kelsey Horst and Jamila Branch that won the Class AAA state title with a time of 3:49.80.

VIDEO: GMA's Emma Keenan, North Penn's Meghan McGovern on PIAA Track and Field

Another bad goal in Flyers playoff history

Ilya Bryzgalov has pondered the size of the universe. But apparently the Philadelphia Flyers goalie did not think hard enough about throwing a pass right at David Clarkson. End result, the puck went into the back of net, the New Jersey Devils took a 2-1 lead and finished of the Flyers' season with a a 3-1 win in Game 5.

Really, really bad goal to give up But was it the worst in Flyers' postseason history. Lets look back on the classics of Flyers bad goaltending in the playoffs.

Patrick Kane beats Michael Leighton in OT, Game 6, 2010 Stanley Cup Finals

Bryz's goal was bad, but this one was a super gut-punch since it was OT, it gave the Chicago Blackhawks the Stanley Cup and for a moment before the replay there was possibly some hope it didn't go in.

Claude Lemieux's slap shot past Hextall, Game 5, 1995 Eastern Conference Finals

Clarkson's tally wasn't the first time the Devils were involved with Flyers goalies giving up a bad goal. Here's Lemieux beating Hextall from the blue line with the game tied 2-2 in the final minute of the third period.

Brian Dawkins calls it a career

Weapon X is calling it a career.

After 16 seasons in the NFL, Brian Dawkins is retiring, announcing his decision on Twitter. Dawkins, who spent the last three years with the Denver Broncos after 13 with the Philadelphia Eagles, finished with 26 sacks and 37 interceptions, made nine Pro Bowls and was selected to the NFL's 200s All-Decade Team.

But beyond the numbers, Dawkins will undoubtedly go down for a lot of fans as the player they most associate with the Eagles run in the last decade that included five trips to the NFC Championship Game and one Super Bowl appearance.

Along with the highlights above, here is Dawkins' speech after the Eagles defeated the Atlanta Falcons in 2004 NFC title game. (And if you are inclined to watch full highlights of that game, there are on Hulu here.)

Claude Giroux's sweet shootout goal vs. Maple Leafs

Is it possible to break a goalie's ankles? Because I'm pretty sure that's what Claude Giroux did last night to Toronto Maple Leafs' goalie Jonas Gustavsson Saturday night.

Flyers' TV announcer described it as a "sick move" and there's probably no better description for what was the only shootout goal in Philadelphia's 1-0 victory.
