BASEBALL NOTEBOOK: North Penn vs. Coatesville

The North Penn Knights baseball team celebrates after its victory over Coatesville in their PIAA District Class AAAA State quarterfinal contest at Spring-Ford High School on Thursday. (Mark C Psoras/The Reporter)

Here are a couple thoughts from North Penn’s 11-1 six-inning victory over Coatesville in the PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinals Thursday afternoon.

_____

Ten batters. Three walks. Two sacrifice flies. One hit by pitch. One fielder's choice. One error. One fly out. One single. Five runs.

That's the basic rundown of North Penn's bottom of the third inning, when the Knights seemed to find any way they could to reach base and score runs, turning on its head a game that was scoreless for the opening 2 1/2 innings.

"We like to play a lot of small ball," sophomore first baseman Jared Melone said. "And then we put the ball in play when we had to."

Coatesville, the District One champ, had no response for NP's five-run outburst. The Knights, meanwhile, tacked on another four in the fourth - collecting five hits while almost batting around again.

Bobby Scott finally put the game away as his two-RBI double in the sixth enacted the 10-run mercy rule.

The win sets up a semifinal with SOL Continental rival Pennridge 3:30 p.m. Monday at Spring-Ford. It will be the fourth meeting between the teams this season, with Pennridge winning the previous three.

_____

It's been four years since North Penn has been this far in states, with the 2009 side beating North Allegheny in the semis before besting Parkland for the program's first PIAA title.

"Four years seems like a long time ago, cause a lot's happened since then," North Penn coach Kevin Manero said. "But you always have to be very thankful and really appreciate how hard it is to get here, because it's tough to get this far. In single-elimination postseason baseball, a lot of things have to go right.

"So we are fortunate to have an opportunity to keep playing. And hopeful we take advantage of that opportunity."

Manero was an assistant on Bob McCreary for those '09 Knights, giving this run a completely new feel.

"It's totally different. When you're an assistant coach, I can say 'Oh, he's got it, he's got it,' he said.  "As a head coach, yeah, there's a lot more pressure, there's a lot more going on. But coaching under Bob McCreary for nine years, that really made me a baseball person.

"If you have to coach with somebody for a long time, he's the guy you want to coach with, because you learn a lot about the game."

_____
Dylan Borawski continued to solid work by the North Penn pitching staff in the postseason.

Borawski gave up just one unearned run in the fifth against the Red Raiders, and allowed only three singles while striking out one and walking one in six innings of work.

Through seven playoff games (five District One and two PIAA), NP pitchers have given up 15 runs, an average or 2.1 per game. No opponent has put up more than four runs in a game, with Brian Maher tossing a pair of complete-game shutouts - first against Strath Haven in the district quarters, then in the state first round against Parkland.

"Our pitching staff is phenomenal right now," Scott said. "We're just going after hitters one after each other."

Pennridge Swim Team adds to Harlem Shake craze

You know the Harlem Shake? Of course you do, you're on the internet.

Well, the Pennridge swim team decide to throw its hat into the latest viral craze. This video deserves a little mention, since instead of just doing the dance with some crazy costumes, the Rams decided to do things below the surface.

And just before these meme finally kicks the bucket, here's a parodyish Harlem Shake of Nicklas Grossmann's goal during the Flyers' win over the Penguins Wednesday night - seen originally on Deadspin, actually done by HockeyVideoHD.

The area’s sports scene once again provided us plenty of exciting and memorable moments throughout 2012.

State qualifiers in basketball, North Penn and Christopher Dock softball both winning District One titles, Doylestown American Legion baseball reaching the Mid-Atlantic Regional and Pennridge football making a run to the district semis. Just to name a few.

To recap all that's taken place, here are some of our best pictures that we have taken over the past 12 months.

BOYS BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK: Confident Lansdale Catholic moves to 3-0

By MIKE CABREY

The difference between last season’s Lansdale Catholic boys basketball team and this year’s was made apparent in the fourth quarter of its 43-37 non-league home win over William Tennent last Thursday.

A three-point play by junior Corey Kirk put the Crusaders up 30-28 with 5:52 remaining, and while Tennent tried everything to reclaim the lead, LC held off the Panthers to head into Philadelphia Catholic League play 3-0.

“I think we’re definitely more confident, cause I think last year, last two minutes, close game, I don’t think we would win that game,” Kirk said. “Our mindset was, ‘Oh, maybe we’ll win this game.’ This year, I think we know we’re going to win that game. We have a good attitude. We know we’re going to come out on top at the end.”

Lansdale Catholic has already matched its win total from 2011-2012 – the Crusaders’ first under coach Ed Enoch – when it finished 3-19. Last year, it took 16 games before LC collected its third win, a 44-38 victory over Monsignor Bonner which also doubled as the Crusaders lone PCL win.

“The kids really bought into the offseason stuff, they’ve worked hard,” Enoch said. “We got a great group of seniors that really make practices, our practices are better this year. We’re more competitive. And they’re great kids.”

Wagner a big help for Souderton
Brendan Wagner finished with a team-high 20 points as Souderton opened its Suburban One League Continental Conference slate with a 54-42 win over North Penn last Friday.

Scoring, however, is not the only thing the 6-foot-8-inch junior is looking to provide the Indians.

“I’m just trying to do what I can do just help the team and everything,” Wagner said. “However many points I can score, rebounds are really important to me, cause if I don’t get the boards, it’s just extra opportunities for them. We can’t have that.”

Against the Knights, Wagner collected eight of the first 10 points during Souderton’s game-ending 16-0 run that turned a 42-28 deficit early in the fourth quarter into a 12-point victory.

For Wagner, it was his second straight game in double digits, having posted 13 in the 51-43 non-league win over Methacton last Tuesday.

The victory over North Penn was the third straight over Continental rival for Souderton. It was also the Indians’ 10th straight at home and their 11th consecutive at home against conference opponents.
